Manager Terry Collins shared the injury news with the press after Gee tossed 6⅔ innings of one-run ball against the Cardinals Wednesday night. The 27-year-old right-hander has been dealing with the issue since Spring Training, but says that doctors have found nothing structurally wrong with his elbow.
Gee's recent run of success -- a 1.29 ERA over 21 innings in his last three starts -- could be an indication that his health is improving, but it may not be enough to save his spot in the rotation when top prospect Zack Wheeler is promoted in the coming weeks. Gee was downright terrible through his first 10 starts of the season, posting a 6.84 earned-run average and allowing a .909 OPS-against, which will likely hold more sway with the club when it comes time to move someone to the bullpen.
Collins said that the club may move to a six-man rotation for a short time when Wheeler comes up, but that eventually either Gee or Jeremy Hefner will have to be moved to the 'pen. If Gee's elbow is still bothering him at that time, it may be a deciding factor in the club's decision.
