Tampa Bay Rays starter Alex Cobb is still battling headaches and is dealing with fluid buildup in his ear from the line drive to the head he took last week. Team doctors are evaluating the young right-hander daily, meaning there is no timetable for his return to the mound at the moment, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Alex Cobb injury: Rays RHP has fluid buildup in ear, no timetable for return
The young right-hander is still feeling the effects of last week’s line drive to the head.
Manager Joe Maddon made sure to emphasize that Cobb is “doing really well” and that there isn’t “a high level of concern” about his making a full recovery from his concussion, but that these kind of things require a lot of time and patience.
Cobb, 25, was drilled in the side of the head Saturday by a line drive off the bat of Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer. Things looked really bad for Cobb initially, as he had to be taken from the field on a stretcher, but he was released from the hospital the next day with just a mild concussion and some cauliflower ear.
Now in his second full season as a member of the Rays’ starting rotation, Cobb owns a 3.01 ERA and 3.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 83⅔ innings over his first 13 starts.
