Alex Cobb activated from 60-day DL by Rays

Exactly two months after getting hit in the head by a line drive, Cobb is set to return and start against the Mariners on Thursday.

Tampa Bay Rays starter Alex Cobb (concussion) has been activated from the 60-day DL and is expected to start Thursday against the Mariners, the team announced. Cobb was hit in the head by a batted ball on June 15 and has made two recent minor-league rehab starts.

Cobb, 25, was enjoying a breakout start to the season by going 6-2 with a 3.01 ERA and a 76-to-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 83.2 innings for the Rays. He had gone 4.1 innings against the Royals and given up two runs on the day that he was struck from a ball off of Eric Hosmer's bat and taken off of the field. Doctors diagnosed Cobb with a concussion and that's when he hit the 60-day DL.

Tampa Bay recently broke a six-game losing streak by scoring two runs in the ninth inning on Wednesday to beat the Mariners, 5-4. The Rays are currently three games back of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.
