New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson had a pin removed from his left hand on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Granderson is recovering from a fracture to his fifth metacarpal on his left hand.

Getting the pin removed is a big step in the recovery process, as it enables him to start gripping bats in preparation for being able to swing again. He’ll start gripping and swinging in the pool, using what amounts to a smaller bat until he can work his way up.

The injury was sustained on May 25, when he took a pitch from Rays reliever Cesar Ramos off the finger. That happened about three months after his right forearm was broken when he was hit by a pitch during his first at-bat of the spring.

As to whether or not Granderson can return by the All-Star break, that’s anyone’s guess. His recovery time should put him somewhere around there, but it all depends on how long it takes him to get his swing back. No estimate has been given by Granderson or the team.

The Yankees could use him back in the lineup, given that they’re currently in third place in the AL East, 2.5 games behind second-place Baltimore and 3.5 games behind first-place Boston.
