Kendrys Morales doesn’t break leg on walk-off home run

Let’s be careful out there, Kendrys.

USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Mariners are going nowhere fast, but they can play spoiler. They did this on Sunday with the help of first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales, who actually sat down for Justin Smoak and Raul Ibanez but came on as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 10th inning of the game. With two outs in the frame and runners on first and third, manager Eric Wedge sent Morales up to hit for the All-American Out, Brendan Ryan, against Grant Morales of the A's. Here's how it played out:

Now, you would expect Morales to be happy. He had a big hit, one that came in a very difficult month -- Morales has been ice cold, and the above represents his first home run of June. Even with the home run, he's hit just .218/.247/.282 on the month. Still, a measured approach was called for given that Morales's last walk-off home run, a 10th-inning grand slam off of Brandon League (the Dodgers weren't watching, apparently), resulted in a broken leg.

As a result of the injury, Morales was gone from May 29, 2010 until Opening Day of 2012. As such, it’s not surprising that as he reached home plate on Sunday he more or less tiptoed in.
