Freddy Garcia optioned by Orioles, may refuse

Kevin Gausman’s coming back up, and Freddy Garcia has a choice to make.

Abelimages

The Baltimore Orioles optioned pitcher Freddy Garcia on Monday afternoon to Triple-A Norfolk, and the 36-year-old righty may refuse the assignment, according to the Associated Press.

Garcia, whom rookie Kevin Gausman replaced on the Orioles' 25-man roster, can either accept the assignment to Norfolk or become a free agent. From the AP:

Manager Buck Showalter says, “Freddy has a decision to make. He can stay with us and go to Triple-A or do something else. Hoping he stays.”

Garcia has 10 starts in 11 appearances for Baltimore this season. He has a 5.77 ERA in 53 innings pitched to go with a 26-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s surrendered 16 home runs in 53 innings, and his 2.72 home runs per nine innings is the highest ratio among pitchers with at least 50 innings in 2013.

Gausman, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, made his major-league debut on May 23 and has a 7.66 ERA in five starts for Baltimore. Showalter said the plan is to use Gausman, at least for now, out of the Orioles' bullpen.
