2013 MLB Draft scouting report round-up: C Jon Denney

Taking a look at one of the top high school catchers in the 2013 MLB draft.

The 2013 MLB Draft has a deep class of high school catchers, but Jon Denney is considered one of the best, especially at the plate. Denney has enough talent offensively to move off catcher if he can’t cut it defensively -- scouts think that he has the highest offensive ceiling of all the high school catchers. The right-handed hitter has power to all fields and makes solid contact. His defense is a work-in-progress, but most believe he has the tools to stick behind the plate, or the athleticism to move to a corner outfield position.

Denney is commited to the University of Arkansas, giving him options if whatever team drafts him fails to sign him. Given that Denney has clear first-round talent, I imagine whomever drafts him will make sure to lock him up.

What they’re saying

  • John Sickels, Minor League Ball: “He has solid defensive actions, although the arm stroke could be improved upon. Even with that bit of extra movement, he still posts above average and occasionally great pop times.”
  • Nick J. Faleris, Baseball Prospectus: “A strong and solid 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame and compact, powerful swing help Denney to produce legit plus power to all fields, which he taps into both during batting practice and in games. He shows solid balance throughout his swing and is generally quiet in his head and hands.”
  • Baseball America: “Denney’s calling card is his righthanded power, which he generates with quality bat speed and strength. He may have to tone down his aggressive approach when he faces better pitching in college.”
