2013 MLB Draft scouting report round-up: OF Billy McKinney

Taking a look at one of the best high school bats available in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Outfielder Billy McKinney has one of the best looking swings in the 2013 MLB Draft, especially for a high school player. McKinney’s bat has helped him rise up draft boards this spring, although concerns about his other tools will hold some teams back.

The outfielder has a disciplined approach at the plate for his age, and possess excellent hand-eye coordination. McKinney is expected to fill in his frame, which should help him add some power. The rest of McKinney’s tools are considered below-average, but he helps play them up with constant effort.

McKinney is committed to Texas Christian University, which traditionally does a good job of holding on to many of their top prospects. Despite his commitment, most expect the outfielder to sign if selected in the first round.

What they’re saying

  • Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com: "There are few, if any, high school bats better than McKinney's. With a balanced approach and a smooth swing from the left side, he projects to be a plus hitter with above-average power."
  • Keith Law, ESPN: "He's very balanced through contact with excellent hip rotation and loft in his finish. I particularly like how quickly he can accelerate his hands from the loaded position, which is how he has success now."
  • Baseball America: "The rest of McKinney's tools are fringy to average, but his arm and speed play up because he goes all-out all the time. Scouts love his makeup and are confident that he'll provide the offense required on an outfield corner."
