Rob Kaminsky is one of the top high school pitchers in the 2013 MLB draft, and made a name for himself over the summer in the showcase circuit. The southpaw does not have a lot of projection left despite being a high school pitcher, but is considered one of the most advanced arms despite his youth.
2013 MLB Draft scouting report: LHP Rob Kaminsky
Examining one of the best high school arms in the 2013 MLB Draft.
His success on the summer circuit last year helped his draft stock greatly, since Kaminsky faces lesser high school competition in New Jersey. Opponents were overmatched by the lefty this season, as his fastball and curveball both project as plus-pitches.
Kaminsky is committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels, and the team is giving the switch-hitter an option to play as a two-way player. Since Kaminsky is expected to go in the first round, most believe the Kaminsky will sign with whomever drafts him.

What they’re saying
- Hudson Belinsky, Baseball Prospectus: “His fastball sits in the low 90s and can reach 94, but the exciting part is his curveball, which has legitimate plus-plus potential. He throws the hammer in the upper 70s and low 80s and generates excellent bite with 11-to-5 action.”
- Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com: “He has a good feel for his changeup, though he hasn’t used it much in his high school career. He also has a pretty good idea of what he’s doing on the mound, but he’s not the biggest guy in the world, leading some to worry about durability.”
- Baseball America: “His height doesn’t lend to much projection and can prevent him from pitching in the bottom of the zone, but he is the most advanced arm in the prep class. He didn’t give up an earned run for the first five weeks of his season and broke his school’s record for career strikeouts in early May.”
