Dustin Peterson is the younger brother of New Mexico Lobos third baseman D.J. Peterson, who is expected to go early in the first round draft. Peterson’s older brother has helped the high-school shortstop receive some attention, since scouts feel like they may have missed his older brother originally and don’t want to make the mistake a second time.
MLB Draft 2013 scouting report: SS Dustin Peterson
The Arizona prep shortstop may go late in the first round.
Peterson’s best skill is his hit tool, as he projects to make solid contact and hit for above-average power at the next level. Peterson plays shortstop for his high school team, but most scouts believe he will move to either second or third base.
He is committed to play for the Arizona State Sun Devils, but if a team selects Peterson in the first round, he may skip college and join his older brother at the professional level.

What they’re saying
- Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com: He has a short, compact swing and a ton of bat speed. The ball jumps off his bat, and he has the chance to hit for both average and plenty of power.”
- Keith Law, ESPN: “Peterson, may be the best draft prospect in his family this year, as he has a looser, leaner body than D.J. does and could potentially stay in the middle infield, albeit at second base rather than at short.”
- Baseball America: “Dustin is more advanced than D.J. was at the same age. He has lightning quick hands and shows a sweet swing with the ability to create loft and backspin.”
