Cardinals closer Edward Mujica was a late addition to the National League All-Star roster, as he was selected to replace teammate and starting pitcher Adam Wainwright on the squad, Major League Baseball announced on Sunday night. Wainwright was deemed ineligible for the midsummer classic by starting for St. Louis on Sunday.

Mujica is one of six Cardinals on the National League All-Star roster and is one of a record 39 first-time All-Stars set for Citi Field on Tuesday.


The All-Star Game will be played at Citi Field at New York on Tuesday night.
Mujica is 1-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 40 games for the Cardinals, with 34 strikeouts and a miniscule two walks in 39⅔ innings. He has converted 26 of 27 save opportunities this season.
The Cardinals, owners of the best record in baseball at 56-36 through Saturday, have a National League-high six All-Stars, including Wainwright. Joining the two pitchers are starting catcher Yadier Molina, starting outfielder Carlos Beltran, and infielders Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig.
