Dodgers place Matt Kemp on DL

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Matt Kemp on the disabled list with a left ankle sprain, retroactive to July 22. It is Kemp's third trip to the DL this season.

Kemp was activated from the DL on Sunday and made a huge impact in the Dodgers' 9-2 victory over the Nationals. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, but he sprained his ankle on home plate late in the game and had to exit. After the game, manager Don Mattingly said that he didn't think Kemp would have to go on the DL, but the next day he ruled him out for LA's series against the Blue Jays. Now he is out until Aug. 7, when he will be eligible to be activated from the DL.

The Dodgers activated Ted Lilly from the DL to take Kemp's place on the roster. The southpaw hasn't pitched for the Dodgers since June 4, when he was placed on the DL for the third time this season, but he has made two rehab starts at Single-A. Lilly is 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts this season.
