Cliff Lee rumors: Phillies say ‘little chance’ of pitcher being traded

The Phillies are asking for a lot in return for Cliff Lee, and Ruben Amaro Jr. doesn’t envision anybody biting.

Drew Hallowell

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said on Tuesday in a spot on MLB Network (via ESPN.com) that there is "very little chance" of the the team trading starting pitcher Cliff Lee before the non-waiver trade deadline on Wednesday.

For more on the Phillies, head over to The Good Phight.

Lee has drawn interest from the Boston Red Sox, who are considered the front-runners to land the 34-year-old ace if he is dealt, along with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals.

A big hang-up on any potential deal for Lee is the Phillies’ reported high asking price for the one-time Cy Young winner. The team isn’t interested in eating any of the near-$70 million owed to Lee. The Phillies also want multiple impact prospects in return.

Lee, who is 10-4 with a 3.05 ERA and 5.95 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2013, has been dealt mid-season on three occasions over the course of his professional career.
