Alex Gordon injury: Royals LF undergoes concussion tests

Gordon could be facing a stint on the seven-day disabled list.

Royals left fielder Alex Gordon underwent concussion tests Thursday after colliding with the outfield wall during Kansas City's victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday, per Dick Kaegel and Kathleen Gier of MLB.com.

If the tests come back positive for a concussion, Gordon will likely be placed on the seven-day DL. He also banged up his hip on the play, so even if the tests are negative, he’s probably going to be out for a few days, according to manager Ned Yost:

“Even if he’s OK, the bruise on his hip is pretty substantial,” Yost said. “That’s going to take a day or two at least, and maybe even longer. And that’s not even knowing where he is on the concussion stuff at the moment.”

In 80 games and 319 at-bats this season, Gordon is hitting .292/.351/.426 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs. He’s on pace to best his homer and RBI totals from 2012, but his batting average, on-base and slugging percentages are all down. His WAR is also down, from 6.5 to 2.3. In the field, Gordon has compiled eight assists without an error.

With Gordon out of the lineup Thursday, David Lough got the start in left. He went 0-for-4 with one strikeout and was lifted for pinch-hitter Salvador Perez in the eighth inning. Perez hit a three-run double to give the Royals a 10-7 win.
