Tulowitzki broke the rib during Colorado's 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on June 13, and he was placed on the DL the following day. He sustained the injury while diving to field a ground ball and was originally expected to miss four to six weeks. He reportedly looked good in BP, and with the progress he's made, folks in Denver are hoping Tulo can return shortly after the All-Star Break.
Since Tulowitzki has been out of the lineup, Jonathan Herrera and Josh Rutledge have been splitting time at short. In 104 at-bats this season, Herrera is hitting .279/.324/.356, and he has eight RBIs without a home run. Rutledge is hitting .218/.283/.325 with six homers and 15 RBIs in 206 at-bats.
Tulowitzki, who has dealt with numerous injury issues in recent years, was having a fine season before his latest trip to the DL. So far in 2013, he’s hitting putting up career numbers at the plate: .347/.413/.635, 16 long balls, 51 RBIs and 41 runs.
