Dan Uggla placed on DL to have eye surgery

The Atlanta Braves second baseman will undergo LASIK surgery and the team hopes he can return by the postseason.

The Atlanta Braves placed struggling second baseman Dan Uggla on the disabled list Tuesday in order for hiim to undergo eye surgery, according to The Associated Press. Though he'll be on the disabled list for 15 days, Uggla's recovery from the LASIK procedure is expected to take three weeks to a month, CBS Sports reports.

Uggla began wearing contact lenses in June after he was diagnosed with an astigmatism during spring training, but his batting issues have continued. He’s hitting .186 and has 21 homers to go with 53 RBI in 388 at-bats this season.

Talking Chop: More on the Braves

The Braves have recalled Triple-A Gwinnett second baseman Tyler Pastornicky to start in Uggla's spot.

Atlanta is sitting pretty in the NL East with a 72-47 record and 14 games ahead of the Washington Nationals as of Tuesday, and the hope is Uggla will be able to return by the playoffs. Forty-three regular season games remain for the Braves, meaning there is little risk in pushing the 33-year-old Uggla to try surgery as an option.
