Charlie Manuel out as Phillies manager

The Phillies announced the managerial change at a press conference on Friday.

Charlie Manuel is no longer the manager for the Philadelphia Phillies. The team held a press conference on Friday afternoon to announce the change.

Manuel has served as the Phillies manager since 2005. He had a 780-636 record leading the Phillies, winning back-to-back NL pennants in 2008 and 2009. The Phillies won the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays in '08, but fell to the New York Yankees one year later.

Philadelphia won 102 games in 2011, but have been in sharp decline the past two seasons, going 81-81 in 2012 and entering Friday with a 53-67 record.

Manuel previously served as the manager for the Cleveland Indians. His Indians won 90 games in 2000 and 91 in 2001 with Manuel at the helm, but he was fired in 2002 when the team started the season with a 39-47 record.

It is currently unknown whether Manuel is stepping down from his manager position or if he has been relieved from his duties.

Update: Ryne Sandberg will be the next manager of the Phillies, sources told Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. Sandberg, the former Chicago Cubs second baseman, has served as the team's third base coach this season. The change was confirmed at the press conference.
