Albert Pujols shut down for season by Angels

Pujols’ plantar fascia injury has officially put an end to his season.

Brian Bahr

Angels first baseman Albert Pujols won't play again in 2013, the team announced Monday. Pujols was diagnosed with a partial tear of the left plantar fascia in late July, and while that wouldn't require surgery, it meant Pujols would be wearing a boot well into August.

Pujols said he wasn’t going to be hasty in his return, but made clear that he did want to play again this season if he felt up to it. Instead, Pujols and the Angels will err on the side of caution, giving the slugger plenty of time to rehab the injury and get healthy for 2014.

Before joining the disabled list, Pujols was hitting .258/.330/.437 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI. His .767 OPS is by far the lowest of his career, though it is still well above league average. Prior to 2013, he had never played in fewer than 143 games in a season.
