It is believed that a National League club put in the successful claim on the outfielder, per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, but not much is known beyond that.
If Byrd had cleared the waiver wire, the Mets could have negotiated a trade with any of the 29 other clubs. But, now that a team has put in a claim, New York must deal with just the one club. In the next 48 hours, the Mets can either let the veteran outfielder go for nothing, work out a trade, or pull him back off of waivers.
Many think that New York made a mistake by not cashing in on Byrd before the July trade deadline. Perhaps they’ll be able to rectify that by dealing him through waivers now.
Byrd, 35, has been one of the big comeback stories of the season. He was released by the Red Sox in early June last year after two miserable months -- .270/.286/.320 -- with the club, and he looked to be done for good when he received a 50-game PED suspension shortly thereafter.
The Mets took a chance on Byrd this spring, however, signing him to a one-year, $700,000 deal. The contract has paid off handsomely for the club, with the veteran batting a surprising .285/.330/.518 with 21 home runs in 117 games.
