Chris Davis rooting for Miguel Cabrera to win Triple Crown

The O’s slugger would like to see Miggy become baseball’s first repeat Triple Crown winner, so long as it doesn’t mean his team misses the playoffs.

USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis is the only player standing between Miguel Cabrera and his second straight Triple Crown, though it seems he'd rather not be.

The American League leader in home runs said Monday that “it would be awesome” if Miggy could repeat the feat, reports David Ginsburg of the Detroit News:

”My goal is not to go out there and keep Miguel Cabrera from winning the Triple Crown. It’s to do everything I can to put us in position to win, whether that means I hit 10 more home runs or two more home runs.

“...not only is [the Triple Crown] extremely hard to do, but it doesn’t happen very often,” he said. “You have to appreciate that.”

Davis added that his main pursuit is to get his team to the playoffs, and that he hopes Cabrera “does do it again” so long as it means the O’s still make it to October.

Cabrera holds a healthy lead in batting average (29 points over Mike Trout) and runs batted in (12 over Davis) but trails the Orioles slugger 46 to 43 in the home run department. Miggy managed to snag the home-run crown last season with 44 big flies, but may need to eclipse 50 to take home the title this season.

Despite several nagging injuries, the Tigers slugger has been on an absolute tear in August, batting .359/.433/.772 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI. If he can continue his hot hitting into September, he’ll have a very good chance of passing Davis and sealing not only consecutive Triple Crown seasons, but MVP seasons as well.
