Twins rumors: Josh Willingham placed on waivers

The outfielder is back from the DL and could be headed to a contending team for the stretch-run.

USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Twins have placed outfielder Josh Willingham on waivers, reports Peter Gammons of MLB Network. Gammons believes he could be an "interesting" bat for an AL team down the stretch.

The Twins had high hopes for Willingham coming into the season, especially after his career year in 2012, but have not gotten much production from the slugger. His playing time has been limited this year -- arthroscopic knee surgery in July sidelined him until Aug. 9 -- but he also hasn’t put up great numbers when healthy.

The Hammer is batting just .214/.348/.393 with 12 big flies in 374 plate appearances on the year. His on-base numbers are still there -- and his batting average has never been great -- but his disappearing power is a concern. Willingham mashed 64 home runs between 2011 and 2012, but has been unable to square up the ball with any regularity this year.

Willingham has about $1.5 million left on his salary this year and is owed an additional $7 million next season, so any team looking to claim the veteran has to hope that his power will return in time.
