Twins prospect Byron Buxton named BA’s 2013 Minor League Player of the Year

Baseball America has bestowed its highest honor on the Minnesota’s young outfield prospect.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Twins prospect Byron Buxton has been named Baseball America's 2013 Minor League Player of the Year, reports BA's Matt Eddy.

Buxton, 19, adds the honor to his trophy case alongside his midseason No. 1 prospect designation from several outlets (including BA) and his Midwest League MVP award. The only award that's eluded him was USA Today's top honor, which was given to Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts last week.

The Twins hoped they had something special when they took Buxton with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 Draft, but even they probably didn’t expect him to be this good so quickly. The Georgia teenager hit a cumulative .334/.424/.520 with 12 home runs and 18 triples in 125 games between Low- and High-A ball this season, complementing his stellar numbers at the plate with incredible speed (55 stolen bases) and elite defense in center field.

Eddy writes that there is an "eery similarity" between Buxton and Angels phenom Mike Trout at the same age, which is dangerously high praise. Eddy isn't alone in his juxtaposition, though. One scout said that Buxton is the "best minor leaguer I've ever seen," while another stated that he has a "better arm," is a "better defender," and is a "better hitter" than Trout. I think it may be difficult to set expectations any higher than that.

Next up for Buxton is a trip to the Arizona Fall League in October.
