Twins catcher Joe Mauer doesn't seem to be any closer to returning to Minnesota's lineup than he was two weeks ago. The all-star backstop was sent home to rest Wednesday when concussion symptoms resurfaced after his workout, reports Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star-Tribune.

GM Terry Ryan said that Mauer was agitated about his symptoms continuing to crop up -- Ryan’s exact word was “irritable” -- but that he’d come back to the field Thursday and try again.
Mauer, 30, has been dealing with concussion woes since taking several foul tips off his mask in late August. He was able to take live batting practice on Friday and Saturday seemingly without issue, but continues to experience dizziness and other concussion symptoms when his heart rate increases.
Given the Justin Morneau concussion saga and the club's current place in the standings, the chances that Mauer will play for the Twins again this season appear slim. There is no discernable reason for the club to rush him back into the lineup, especially when his long-term health is at risk.
Mauer has been his usual MVP self this season when healthy. He’s batting .324/.404/.476 with 11 home runs and 35 doubles in 113 games on the year. He’s under contract in Minnesota through the 2018 season.
