Red Sox honoring Mariano Rivera at Fenway on Sunday

Boston will hold a pre-game ceremony to pay homage to the Sandman’s illustrious career.

USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox will hold a pre-game farewell ceremony for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera at Fenway Park on Sunday, reports the Boston Herald.

The festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, roughly half an hour before the start of what will be Rivera’s last regular season game in Boston.

It’s unclear what exactly the Red Sox have in store for the all-time saves leader and sure-fire Hall-of-Famer. Other teams around the league have presented Mo with a parting gift of some sort, so it’s likely that Boston will at least do something to that effect.

Rivera, 43, has been a thorn in the side of just about every team for the last two decades, but has been especially prickly against the rival Red Sox at Fenway. The Sandman owns a 2.54 earned-run average to go along with 36 saves in 55 appearances in Boston, second only to Camden Yards among away parks (in terms of innings pitched).

Mo has been on a farewell tour of sorts around the country all season. Yankees manager Joe Girardi has expressed an interest in talking his closer out of retirement this fall, but Rivera has seemed pretty keen on sticking to his retirement plan.
