Yankees tried to work out trade for Dan Haren

New York was looking for a starter to pitch Thursday against Baltimore.

The New York Yankees attempted to work out a trade for Washington Nationals starter Dan Haren last weekend, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Yankees were hoping to shore up their rotation depth, looking for a starter to pitch Thursday night against the Baltimore Orioles. Joe Girardi decided to have Phil Hughes and David Huff each throw three innings against the Orioles in the Yankees 6-5 victory.

Hughes and Huff have both struggled this year, which caused general manager Brian Cashman to look for an upgrade. Cashman has remained active on the market, telling Rosenthal:

“We haven’t stopped trying to improve. We’ve always been open to different things, pursuing different things. It started all the way back in March, when all the injuries hit.”

Haren has had an inconsistent season, but pitched better after the All-Star break, posting a 4.06 ERA while striking out 56 batters over 57 2/3 innings.

His contract was the likely holdup between the two teams, according to Rosenthal. Haren is still due $1.5 million, and the Yankees would have only received three regular season starts for that price.
