Yoenis Cespedes injury: Athletics OF to undergo MRI on shoulder

Cespedes initially injured his shoulder diving after a flyball.

Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will undergo an MRI on Monday after being scratched from the lineup Sunday with a sore shoulder, reports Jane Lee of MLB.com.

Cespedes injured his shoulder during the team’s last homestand attempting to dive for a ball. The injury didn’t appear to affect his swing; he went 6-for-19 with nine RBI during Oakland’s six-game road trip. Cespedes did start one game at designated hitter, though, and was slated to start a second straight game at DH before being removed from the batting order.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin did not know the seriousness of Cespedes’ injury, but hopes that the outfielder can return soon, telling Lee:

“I cross my fingers and hope not. Hopefully we can use him in a DH role. Pretty important guy to have.”

Cespedes has hit .241/.299/.439 with 23 home runs in 126 games this season while serving as the team's primary left fielder. Chris Young, Brandon Moss and Seth Smith could all see time in left if Cespedes needs to miss a few games.
