Gonzalez will a seek a second opinion on his finger, but is expected to undergo the procedure.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is expected to undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right middle finger, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

The injury has bothered Gonzalez for the past ten weeks, and 2 1/2 months of rest has failed to heal his finger. An Arizona physician recommended Gonzalez undergo the surgery, but he will seek a second opinion in Cleveland on Thursday.

Gonzalez discussed his upcoming choice with Renck, telling the reporter:

“It’s my decision. I am probably going to have it regardless of what he says. It’s just not getting any better. I want to be ready for spring training.”

If he decides to undergo the procedure, the surgery will likely take place immediately after the season. Barring any setbacks, Gonzalez would be able to swing a bat in early January.

Gonzalez had a strong offensive campaign before the injury, batting .302/.367/.591 with 26 homers and 70 RBI over 436 plate appearances. The outfielder still has the fifth-most home runs in the NL despite not receiving a plate appearance since Aug. 4.
