St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams had to leave Wednesday night's game against the Cardinals because of pain in his right elbow, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Adams, 25, has been bothered by his elbow off and on for a while. There’s no indication to this point that his current joint woes are related to the bone-chip and -spur surgery he had last year, but it certainly raises red flags.
Manager Mike Matheny said that the full-bodied first baseman has received occasional treatment for the “little zingers” he’s experiencing in the joint, but the Cards did not run any tests on Adams’ elbow after the game,
They may need to run an MRI soon, however, if things don't improve quickly. The club's regular man at the cold corner, Allen Craig, is currently on the sidelines with a sprained foot, so losing Adams for any period of time could leave St. Louis very thin at first.
Brock Peterson -- he of the 26 career major-league plate appearances -- replaced Adams ably on Wednesday, but a journeyman rookie is not the kind of player a club wants at first for a postseason run.
Adams has been a solid contributor in a part-time role for St. Louis this year, batting .271/.326/.481 with 14 home runs in 98 games.
