Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino return to Red Sox lineup

Both players left Sunday’s game against the White Sox early with injuries.

Boston Red Sox outfielders Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury both returned to the Red Sox lineup Monday after exiting Sunday's game with injuries, reports Alex Speier of WEEI.

Victorino left the series finale against the Chicago White Sox after the sixth inning. The outfielder injured his hip sliding into first base during the fourth inning, but stayed in the game. Victornio made a nice running catch on an Avisail Garcia flyball in the fifth, but struggled to run out a grounder in the sixth.

Red Sox manager John Farrell discussed Victorino’s injury with Ian Browne of MLB.com, telling the reporter:

“He’s got a contusion he’s dealing with and it begins to affect some of the other areas that he’s been managing for a while. We fully expect him to be on the field tomorrow but when he aggravates it, it begins to kind of shut some things down on him and he doesn’t feel the explosiveness.”

Ellsbury left the game in the top of the ninth with a sore left thumb. Farell talked about Ellsbury’s injury as well, stating:

“Jacoby, there were a couple of at-bats where he got jammed and that bat is kind of banging on that bone inside the thumb. We’re hopeful and expect him to be on the field as well tomorrow. We’ll check them both obviously in the morning.”

Both outfielders have key contributors to the Red Sox this season. Ellsbury entered Monday batting .299/.356/.420, while Victorino is hitting .295/.349/.449.
