Tyler Flowers injury: White Sox C to undergo shoulder surgery

Flowers has been bothered by the shoulder injury since last season.

Chicago White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers will undergo shoulder surgery on Thursday, which will sideline him for 3-6 months, reports Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago.

Flowers originally injured his shoulder one year ago, and the injury grew worse during the offseason, according to Hayes. He received three opinions on his shoulder before deciding to go through with the procedure.

The shoulder injury may have impacted Flowers at the plate this year. Flowers, not considered an offensive threat before the year began, had a disastrous campaign, batting .195/.247/.355 with 94 strikeouts in 275 plate appearances.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura named Flowers the starting catcher before the season began, replacing A.J. Pierzynski, who left in free-agency during the offseason to join the Texas Rangers. Flowers' struggles lead the team to promote rookie Josh Phegley to majors in early July. Phegley has served as the starting catcher since his promotion, batting .211/.221/.331 in 147 plate appearances.
