Braves win National League East

Atlanta won its 12th NL East crown and first since 2005 with a win over the Chicago Cubs.

David Banks

The Atlanta Braves clinched their first NL East division crown since 2005 thanks to the Washington Nationals' 4-2 loss against the Miami Marlins.

Atlanta entered Sunday with a magic number of one, needing a win over the Chicago Cubs or a Nationals loss to clinch the division; Washington lost the first game of its doubleheader Sunday. Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich each went deep for the Marlins, and the Nationals mustered little run support for Dan Haren.

The Braves took care of business themselves, earning a 5-2 victory over Chicago. Freddie Freeman got the offense started with a two-run homer in the top of the first, driving a first-pitch fastball over the stands in right field and onto Sheffield Ave:

Andrelton Simmons smacked a pair of homers, providing the rest of the offense for the Braves.

Julio Teheran turned in a dominant performance, only allowing one run on four hits over six innings. The right-hander flashed impressive stuff, striking out seven while issuing zero walks. Craig Kimbrel tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 49th save of the year.

Atlanta’s win on Sunday was its 92nd of the season. The Braves have won 12 NL East titles since moving to the division in 1994.
