Around the Bases: Royals’ walk-off grand slam clinches West for A’s

White Sox 6, Tigers 3: Erik Johnson outdueled Anibal Sanchez, holding the Tigers to two runs over 6 ⅔ innings. Avisail Garcia went 3-for-5 against his former team, while Conor Gillaspie, Jeff Keppinger and Garcia each drove in a pair of runs. The Tigers' magic number to clinch the division remains at two.

Marlins 4, Nationals 2 (Game One): Washington lost the first game of their double-header, securing the NL East crown for Atlanta. Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich each homered for Miami.

Braves 5, Cubs 2: Atlanta took care of business after the Nationals loss for their 92nd win of the season. Freddie Freeman crushed a home run out of Wrigley Field in the top of the first:

Andrelton Simmons added a pair of homers, providing the rest of the offense for the Braves. Julio Teheran turned in a quality start, only allowing one run on four hits over six innings while fanning seven. The NL East champions are currently on pace to hold home field advantage in the NLDS and NLCS should they advance.

Indians 9, Astros 2: Cleveland completed a four-game sweep over Houston with an impressive offensive performance. Jason Kipnis paced the attack with three hits, while Michael Bourn, Mike Aviles, Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana each drove in a pair of runs. Corey Kluber threw 5 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs on six hits for his 10th win of the year.

Rays 3, Orioles 1: Enny Romero and five Tampa Bay relievers combined to hold the Orioles to one run on three hits, giving the Rays a third straight win over the Orioles. David DeJesus smacked a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, while James Loney and Matt Joyce each drove in a run.

Royals 4, Rangers 0 (10): Justin Maxwell hit a walk-off grand slam off Joakim Soria, clinching the AL West for Oakland:

James Shields tossed eight scoreless innings for Kansas City despite being on his right elbow by a David Murphy line-drive. Alexi Ogando countered Shields with seven shutout innings, only allowing two hits.

Athletics 11, Twins 7: The A's scored six runs in the second inning to cap off a big day in the Bay Area. The AL West title is the second in as many years for Billy Beane's club. CoCo Crisp continued his excellent season with his 22nd home run of the year.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 2: David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr. each hit homers for Boston, helping the club win their final regular-season home game of the year. Felix Doubront earned his 11th win of the year, giving up two runs on four hits over seven frames. The Red Sox finished 53-28 at Fenway Park, and own a MLB-best 95-62 overall record.

Giants 2, Yankees 1: Andy Pettitte earned the tough-luck loss in his final start at Yankee Stadium, but still pitched 7 strong innings and earned a stadium ovation from Yankees fans:

Mariano Rivera also made his final appearance at Yankee Stadium, pitching the final 1 ⅔ innings. Metallica performed "Enter Sandman" during a 50-minute pregame ceremony to honor the closer:

Mets 4, Phillies 3: Juan Lagares cracked a RBI-double in the top of the eighth, driving in the game-winning run for the Mets.

Reds 11, Pirates 3: The Cincinnati offense exploded for 11 runs on 16 hits, bringing the Reds back into a tie with the Pirates for first place in the NL Wild Card. Jay Bruce smashed a bases-clearing double in the top of the first, scoring later in the inning on a Todd Frazier two-run homer. Billy Hamilton went 3-for-6 in the leadoff spot, swiping a pair of bases.

Mariners 3, Angels 2:

Dodgers 1, Padres 0: Zack Greinke was superb over five innings before being pulled early, and an unearned run in the seventh inning was enough to give Los Angeles their 90th win of the season. With the NL West already wrapped up, the Dodgers will just be looking to stay healthy this final week of the season.

Diamondbacks 13, Rockies 9: Coors Field got the best of this one. The D-backs entered the ninth inning with an 8-5 lead and scored five runs. The Rockies rallied for four more runs in the bottom half of the frame, but they would eventually fall short in this NL West battle.

Nationals 5, Marlins 4 (Game Two): The Nats kept their slim playoff hopes alive by salvaging the second game of the double-header with a walk-off win. Wilson Ramos drove in the game-winning hit as Chris Coghlan bobbed a fairly routine grounder that allowed Eury Perez to score. Washington is five games back in the Wild Card hunt and kicks off a series in St. Louis on Monday.

Brewers 6, Cardinals 4: The Cardinals missed an opportunity to pad onto their lead in the Central against the Brew Crew. Even with the loss, the Redbirds hold a two-game lead over the Pirates and Reds in the Central with six to play.
