Dutton has gotten no indication -- “not even a whiff” -- from anyone in the organization that there is a timetable of any kind for discussing a possible contract extension for Yost. While that could signify a variety of things, Dutton believes it means that Yost’s return for a fifth season as Royals manager is not assured.
While the team’s record has improved in each season since he took the helm in May 2010, the expectations for the club (within the organization, at least) were incredibly high this year. As a result, anything other than a playoff berth may potentially be viewed as a disappointment.
The Royals are currently three games back of the second AL Wild Card spot with six games left to go. Baseball Prospectus has their odds of making the postseason at just 1.5%, so the club will need something of a miracle to reach October baseball.
