Giancarlo Stanton expected to remain with Marlins

The Marlins reportedly want to build around Stanton, not trade him away.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is expected to remain with the team in 2014, reports Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.

Any industry insider told Frisaro that he doesn’t “see any scenario” where the Marlins part ways with their slugger. Any source added that the Marlins want to build around Stanton, not trade him away.

Stanton will be arbitration eligible for the first time this winter. The Marlins are not expected to reach a multi-year contract with Stanton for a number of reasons. The outfielder wants to keep his options open long-term, while Miami is concerned about his injury history.

Frisaro estimates that Stanton will likely earn $7 million in arbitration, which the Marlins can easily afford. Miami’s payroll is expected to stay around $37 million in 2014.

The 23-year-old missed all of May with a strained hamstring, and has only appeared in 113 games this season. Stanton has produced when healthy, batting .249/.367/.484 with 24 home runs.
