Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez was sentenced to pay a $250 fine and serve one year of probation Tuesday morning after being found guilty of a fourth-degree misdemeanor drug charge, reports James F. McCarthy of the Plain Dealer.

Perez, 28, pleaded no contest to charges of misdemeanor drug abuse for having a small package of marijuana mailed to his Rocky River home on June 4.
During his probationary period, Perez must complete MLB’s drug-treatment program and give a 15- to 20-minute presentation on the dangers of drugs to local high school students. Said Municipal Jude Brian Hagan:
“You’re highly regarded, kids look up to you,” Hagan said. “But you made a big mistake. I hope that through your efforts you can deter someone else from making that same mistake.”
Perez’s wife, Melanie, also appeared in court Tuesday morning to address charges related to her husband’s. She entered a plea to minor drug possession, which will constitute just a $50 fine (no probation) if her drug test comes back clean.
The six-ounce bag of pot, sent to Perez from Los Angeles, was addressed to the pitcher’s dog, Brody Baum. Police confiscated the weed and then searched the house, where they found “two pipes, a bong, and several items of drug paraphernalia.” Perez said all the items were his.
