MLB injury roundup: Desmond Jennings limited to pinch-hit duties

Taking a look at some of the latest injury news involving players on post-season bound teams.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball's regular season may be over, but there is still plenty of exciting baseball left to be played during the post-season. A number of key players are planning on returning to their team's lineups despite battling nagging injuries, as they try to help their clubs earn a World Series title.

Jennings limited to PH duties

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings will be limited to pinch-hitting duties in the team's tiebreaker game against the Texas Rangers, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Jennings has been battling a left hamstring injury during the past week. The outfielder told Topkin that the injury is feeling better, but he is unable to run enough to play defense. Jennings has served as the team’s primary centerfielder this season, batting .252/.333/.414.

Gentry back in lineup

Rangers outfielder Craig Gentry returned to the team's lineup on Sunday after having his right ankle stepped on Saturday, writes T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com

Gentry had his foot stepped on after reaching base on a bunt single, which required attention from Ron Washington and the Texas training staff. The outfielder told Sullivan that he felt OK, and expects to play in Game 163.

Bourn exits game with calf injury

Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Bourn left Sunday's regular season finale with a tight left calf, reports Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Bourn pulled up lame attempting to steal second base in the top of the ninth inning, and was lifted for Drew Stubbs in the bottom half of the inning. The center fielder told Hoynes that he still expects to play on Wednesday despite the injury.

X-rays negative on Phillips’ shin

X-rays on Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left shin came back negative and he expects to play in Tuesday's NL Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

Phillips fouled a ball of his shin during the fifth inning of Saturday’s 8-3 loss to the Pirates. He managed to collect a single during the at-bat, but was replaced by a pinch-runner.

Ethier may not make NLDS roster

Los Angeles Dodgers are weighing their options on whether to place Andre Ethier on the National League Division Series roster, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.

Ethier has been bothered by a left ankle injury since Sept. 13, and has not been cleared to run the bases. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated to Gurnick that the team may carry Ethier exclusively as a pinch-hitter
