The Baltimore Orioles activated Jason Hammel off the disabled list, but the club's Opening Day starter is expected to pitch out of the bullpen, manager Buck Showalter told Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
Orioles activate Jason Hammel off DL, send RHP to bullpen
Hammel has been out since July 31 with a right forearm strain.

Hammel will not pitch for Baltimore until Saturday. The Orioles starting rotation is set for now, so Hammel will pitch as a reliever. Hammel has exclusively been a starter in Baltimore, but worked out of the bullpen in 2011 with the Colorado Rockies.
The right-hander, who has been sidelined since July 31 with a right forearm strain, is excited to rejoin the club in any role, telling Connolly:
“It was tough watching the guys on TV. I want to be there with them. And be able to go through the ups and downs together. But it is what it is right now. So, obviously, I know I can help and I just tried to get back as quick as I could.”
Hammel threw 123 innings before suffering the injury, going 7-8 with a 5.20 ERA. The right-hander battled home run issues, surrendering 20 homers after only allowing nine last season.
