Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has a compression fracture in his right foot, manager John Farrell announced on Sunday.

Ellsbury had his foot examined in Boston on Saturday, then went to Denver for a second opinion. The two tests confirmed the injury, which is a non-displaced fracture. He will be in a boot for five days, according to Farrell, and then the team will see how he has responded to the treatment.

Farrell discussed Ellsbury’s injury with Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com, telling the reporter:
“[Ellsbury] is frustrated.He wants to be on the field. He feels like he can play right now. But at the direction of the medical people, we have to be careful with this...I can tell you this: Jacoby wants to be on the field. He’s kind of [ticked] he’s not here right now, to be honest with you.”
The outfielder fouled a ball off his foot on Aug. 28, which caused the injury, but he was able to play in seven of the Red Sox’s next eight games. There is no timetable for Ellsbury, although he is hoping to return before the end of the season.
Ellsbury, a pending free agent, is batting .299/.355/.424 while leading the majors with 52 stolen bases. Boston can afford to give Ellsbury some rest, entering Sunday with an eight-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
