Bronson Arroyo has no offer from MLB teams

Arroyo doesn’t even have an offer to turn down.

Bronson Arroyo has received no offer from any MLB teams despite being linked with a number of clubs this offseason, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Having pitched in the major leagues for 14 seasons, Arroyo is growing frustrated with the lack of interest in his services this winter, telling Stark, “I don’t even have an offer to turn down. So I might still be sitting here on March 1. I have no idea.”

The 36-year-old Arroyo pitched for the Reds for eight years before this offseason and has been a model of durability, throwing no fewer than 199 innings in every season dating back to 2004. Last year with the Reds, Arroyo finished with a 3.79 ERA and nearly four times as many strikeouts as walks in 202 innings. The right-hander owns a 4.19 ERA for his career, and despite his advanced age, has been a consistent performer for two straight seasons in Cincinnati.

That hasn’t helped him this winter, however, and Arroyo is growing increasingly frustrated:

I get [Clayton] Kershaw. I get why he got all that money. But then you've got guys like Dice-K [Matsuzaka], who came over here and was good for the first couple of years, but then didn't pan out. And when he doesn't pan out, they all just forget and go on to the next guy who's not proven, and pay him.

Arroyo has been linked with a number of teams looking for pitching this offseason, including the Twins, Orioles, Dodgers and Blue Jays. But that interest hasn't materialized into an offer as of yet. The Twins and Dodgers signed other starters, and the Blue Jays and Orioles have yet to make a major free-agent splash.

The Angels, who acquired starters Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs in a three-team trade in December, are still searching for pitching, but according to a report on Tuesday, have ruled out pursuing Arroyo.

There is still time for Arroyo to find a team, but other top pitchers like Ubaldo Jimenez, Ervin Santana, and now A.J. Burnett remain out on the market as well. The chances that Arroyo is able to find a multi-year offer, which he was reportedly searching for earlier in the offseason, have undoubtedly diminished.

Arroyo is clearly agitated, but considering other top free-agent starters on the market have yet to sign, he will likely be waiting a little while longer for an offer to arrive.
