If postseason runs are often defined by miraculous individual performances, we'll likely be remembering what St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter has accomplished this fall. A leadoff hitter known more for hitting to the gaps than over the wall, Carpenter has become one of baseball's most potent sluggers this October.
Matt Carpenter goes deep again, Cardinals take early lead over Giants
After hitting eight homers in 158 regular season games, Carpenter has already smacked four homers in six games this postseason.

On Sunday, Carpenter took San Francisco's Jake Peavy deep for his fourth home run of the postseason, putting the Cardinals ahead in Game 2:
Carpenter hit a total of eight home runs in more than 700 plate appearances with the club during the regular season. After going deep against Peavy, he's now hit four homers in just 24 postseason plate appearances, powering the Cards past the Dodgers in the NLDS and into a competitive NLCS with the Giants thus far.
The third baseman hasn’t capitalized on every opportunity, however. In the fourth inning Sunday, Carpenter had a chance to potentially blow the game open with the bases loaded and two outs, but popped up into the outfield to end the frame and keep the game close. Now the Cardinals lead the Giants, 2-0, in the fifth inning on Sunday.
