Cardinals blow 9th inning lead against Giants on wild pitch

St. Louis was one out away from winning Game 2, but a costly wild pitch allowed San Francisco to tie the game.

The St. Louis Cardinals were just one pitch away from putting away Game 2 of the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants and moving on with a tied series. Instead, a fastball got away from closer Trevor Rosenthal at the worst possible time, and the result of Sunday's game is back in the air entering the bottom of the ninth inning.

Giants second baseman Joe Panik had a 3-2 count against Rosenthal when he lost control of a fastball that bounced in front of the plate, and backup catcher Tony Cruz couldn't corral the pitch:

The mistake allowed Giants pinch runner Matt Duffy to come around and score, tying the game 4-4 when the Cardinals were just one out from ensuring victory. The issues wouldn't end there, either, as Rosenthal would load the bases before getting pulled by manager Mike Matheny. Seth Maness came in for the Cardinals and get out of the jam, and now we're entering the bottom of the ninth all tied up.
