Cardinals vs. Giants, 2014 NLCS Game 4: Time, TV schedule, starting pitchers and how to watch online
Ryan Vogelsong looks to continue a streak of five consecutive postseason starts in which he’s allowed one run or fewer.
The San Francisco Giants have a chance to put the St. Louis Cardinals on the ropes on Wednesday when Game 4 of the National League Championship Series commences at AT&T Park. It doesn't hurt the Giants to have one of the better postseason starters of the last few years taking the mound to start the pivotal contest.
Ryan Vogelsong has not allowed more than one run in any of his five playoff starts. The 37-year-old right-hander owns a 1.19 ERA in 30⅓ postseason innings and has surrendered just two runs in 14 innings spanning two October starts against the Cardinals.
Vogelsong has clearly mastered the art of navigating through the irregular schedule that playoff baseball presents.
“You’ve just got to know yourself, really,” Vogelsong told reporters before the Giants’ Game 3 victory. “You’ve got to know when to back off a little bit and get some rest. You’ve got to know when it’s time to grind a little bit and get some more work.”
The well-traveled veteran hasn’t eclipsed seven innings in any of his starts, but he also hasn’t needed to. In fact, regardless of who gets the ball to start the game, just staying competitive long enough to get to the bullpen has been worked out tremendously for San Francisco. In 28 innings of work this postseason, Giants relievers have allowed only six runs.
The Cardinals will send Shelby Miller to the hill to make his second career postseason start. Miller held the Dodgers to two runs in 5⅔ innings in St. Louis' series-clinching win in Game 4 of the NLDS.
