Tigers vs. Orioles, 2014 ALDS Game 2: Time, TV schedule, live stream and starting pitchers
The Tigers will send Justin Verlander, who was thoroughly dominant in the 2013 postseason, to the mound opposite a calm and cool Wei-Yin Chen in Game 2.
Orioles right-hander Wei-Yin Chen knows he needs to keep his nerves in check as he approaches his second career postseason start on Friday in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Tigers.
“I think tomorrow when I get up to the mound, I will be all sweating and nervous, just like I am now,” Chen told reporters before Baltimore’s 12-3 win over Detroit in Game 1 on Thursday. “But still, as Buck [Showalter] said, we should try to stay calm and do whatever we did in the season, whatever you did to get you here.”
Chen didn't have any problems staying in control in his only previous playoff outing. The 29-year-old native of Taiwan held the Yankees to one run in 6⅓ innings in Game 2 of the 2012 ALDS, a series the Orioles eventually lost. Having that little bit of postseason experience is key for Chen.
“[When] you have experience playing in [the] playoffs, you will know how the crowds would be and how the environment would be again,” Chen explained.
Chen will face Justin Verlander, who is also no stranger to the postseason. Verlander owns a 3.29 ERA in 15 playoff starts, and though he's coming off of a poor regular season, that was also a concern a year ago, when he allowed only one run in 23 innings in the ALDS and ALCS.
“You come into the postseason, and it’s a whole new season,” Verlander said before Game 1. “I’ve always been able to turn the page, good, bad, indifferent, turn the page and focus on the next start and that’s it.”
