Buck Showalter wins 2014 AL Manager of the Year award

Showalter earns the third Manager of the Year award of his career after leading the Orioles to the AL East title.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter was officially named the 2014 AL Manager of the Year on Tuesday night, capturing 25 of 30 first place votes. Showalter topped fellow finalists Mike Scioscia of the Angels and Ned Yost of the Royals to win the award.

In his fifth season in Baltimore, Showalter led the Orioles to a 96-66 record and helped the club run away with the AL East title. The Orioles were ultimately swept by Yost's Royals in the ALCS after beating the Tigers in the ALDS. Baltimore has now made the playoffs twice during Showalter's tenure.

This season marks the third time Showalter has been honored as Manager of the Year after he won the award in 1994 with the Yankees and 2004 with the Rangers. He is the first Orioles manager to receive the award since Davey Johnson led Baltimore to 98 wins during the 1997 campaign. He joins Tony LaRussa (1983 White Sox, 1988/1992 A's, 2002 Cardinals) as the only managers to with the award with three different teams.

The voting process took place prior to the playoffs, so Yost was not rewarded for managing the Royals into the World Series.
