Red Sox, Giants meet with James Shields, per source

The right-hander is meeting with both San Francisco and Boston on Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO -- After losing out to the Cubs in the Jon Lester sweepstakes on Tuesday night, the Giants and Red Sox appear to be turning their attention to James Shields. According to major-league sources, both San Francisco and Boston are meeting with Shields on Wednesday as the market continues to heat up for him after a lengthy dormant period.

The Giants are also said to have strong interest in free agent Ervin Santana, but may look at Shields as a more significant option after expressing a willingness to spend big on Lester before he signed with the Cubs. The team is also looking at trade candidates, with the current market full of available arms to choose from.

Boston was said to be close to a deal that would land them Wade Miley earlier Wednesday, but Diamondbacks’ general manager Dave Stewart said that he was not in talks with Boston about a deal involving the southpaw. The Sox are likely to add two starting pitchers by the end of the winter, and industry speculation is that Shields is at or near the top of their list.

The Giants and Red Sox join the Rangers in the mix for Shields, though, at this point his market is just getting started in the wake of Lester’s signing. It is unclear if he could strike a deal by the end of the Winter Meetings.
