MLB trade rumors: Mets and Rangers talking pitching, infielders

The New York Mets and Rangers are looking to deal from their surpluses, according to multiple sources.

SAN DIEGO -- The Mets and Rangers are currently engaged in trade conversations and may strike a deal by the end of the Winter Meetings, according to multiple major league sources. While it is currently unclear exactly which players the sides are discussing at the moment, New York's pitching surplus and the Rangers' glut of infielders appear to make the teams match up in trade talks.

Names that could be included in talks include Rangers infielders Elvis Andrus, Luis Sardinas, Jurickson Profar or Rougned Odor, while possibilities on the Mets' side include pitchers Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, and even Noah Syndergaard, according to sources. There is a growing belief around baseball that the Mets would be willing to deal Syndergaard in the right deal.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com noted today that the Rangers were expected to pursue Niese and Gee at some point during the week. Gee is being aggressively shopped by New York, according to a report from Adam Rubin of ESPN.com.

The pitching market is stalled at the moment as the league awaits the news of where Jon Lester will sign, so the Mets may wait to trade from their surplus until Lester signs with a club and leaves three suitors looking at alternative options. Until then, they are likely to continue talking to the Rangers in hopes of working out a deal.
