Spring training: Indians’ pitchers and catchers report Tuesday

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks have a head start on the 2014 season, but the Indians aren't far behind. Cleveland is the third club to start sending players to camp this spring. Pitchers and catchers for the Tribe report on Tuesday as the Indians try to make it back to the playoffs again -- and to stick around for more than just one game this time around.

The Indians followed a big offseason in 2013 with a quiet one heading into 2014. They have question marks in both the rotation and the bullpen, but the story that is likely to dominate Goodyear this spring is catcher Carlos Santana's move to third base. Third was a weak spot for the Indians last season and after Yan Gomes breakout performance behind the plate last year, it is easy to see why Cleveland would want to move the defensively-challenged Santana out from behind the plate and to the hot corner. Third base isn't the best place to hide if you are allergic to leather, however. Many fans will remember Miguel Cabrera taking a high-hopper to the face when he was moving back to the position during spring training in 2012. Santana played third this winter in the Dominican League and he spent 58 games there in the minors as well, so he isn't in completely uncharted territory, but a smooth transition doesn't seem likely. He may turn out to be the answer the Indians are looking for at third by the time April comes around, but there are probably going to be some bumps along the way.
