MLB roundup: Bonifacio clears waivers, Profar struggling with shoulder tendinitis

After the Royals designated him for assignment on Monday, Emilio Bonifacio is now a free agent.

Emilio Bonifacio has cleared waivers and is now able to sign with any major league club as a free agent, according to a report from Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

The Royals released Bonifacio on Monday despite agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million deal to avoid arbitration with the infielder earlier in the offseason. When the Royals signed Bruce Chen in late January, the team needed to make room to add the left-handed hurler onto its 40-man roster and decided to release Bonifacio as a result.

The 28-year-old Bonifacio hit just .243/.295/.331 in 136 games for the Blue Jays and Royals in 2013. He did steal 28 bases in 36 attempts and played six different positions last season, including all three outfield spots. The switch-hitting utility man is coming off two subpar seasons after a strong 2011 campaign with the Marlins in which he hit .296/.360/.393 with three home runs, 36 RBI and 40 stolen bases.

Profar has shoulder tendinitis

Jurickson Profar will be limited early in spring training as he recovers from elbow tendinitis, Rangers GM Jon Daniels said Wednesday in a conference call.

The 20-year-old infielder is expected to be the Rangers' starting second baseman this season, but will probably not be able to throw until the second week of camp, according to Daniels. Profar batted .234/.308/.336 with six home runs and 26 RBI in 85 games for Texas last season, but was blocked from a starting job by Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler. With Kinsler gone, the Rangers are hoping that Profar can take over the reigns at second base.

New Dodger Arruebarruena has “elite glove”

News broke on Wednesday morning that the Dodgers are nearing an agreement for Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena. According to a scout that Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan spoke to, Arruebarruena is a slick-fielding shortstop with an "elite glove." The scout did have questions about the 25-year-old's bat, guessing he would start at either HIgh-A or Double-A to begin the season.

Astros outright Wallace

Astros first baseman Brett Wallace has cleared waivers and been out-righted, per MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo. Wallace will go to Astros camp as a non-roster invite with a chance to win a job on the club's roster. The 27-year-old first baseman batted .221/.284/.431 with 13 home runs over 79 games in 2013, but struck out 104 times in 262 at-bats.
