“What’s it take to call back and say, ‘No, thank you?’”
The Reds let Baker go after losing to the Pirates in the NL Wild Card play-in game in October. The team suggested to Baker that both parties announce the departure as a retirement, but the 64-year-old California native wanted no part of it:
“That’s not what I wanted. I’ll know when I want to retire ... I said, ‘Let’s call it what it is.’”
Cincinnati announced the firing of Baker on Oct. 4, three days after he completed his third 90-plus-win season in four years. The team hired Bryan Price as Baker's replacement 18 days later.
Baker is 1,671-1,504 in 20 seasons with the Reds, Giants and Cubs. He hasn't won a World Series in his managerial career but has reached the postseason seven times and won the 2002 NL pennant with San Francisco.
