Jason Kipnis, Indians could begin contract extension talks

Kipnis is one of the game’s top second basemen and likely won’t come cheap.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Indians and star second baseman Jason Kipnis could begin contract extension talks soon, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Kipnis, 26, has been one of the game’s top second basemen since debuting in 2011. He is coming off a career-year in which he hit .284/.366/.452 with 17 home runs, 84 RBI and 30 stolen bases. Kipnis was worth 5.9 WAR (wins above replacement) in 2013, making him one of the most valuable infielders in baseball.

As far as potential contracts for go, Dustin Pedroia’s eight-year extension worth $110 million and Ian Kinsler’s five-year, $75-million extension in 2012 could serve as a framework if contract talks begin.

Kipnis is not eligible for arbitration until next winter and is under team control through the end of the 2018 season. The idea for Cleveland would be to lock down some of Kipnis’ free agent years before he’s able to test the market, where he could be in for a huge payday should he continue producing at such a high rate.
